"Business growth in conflict with the environment"

Your attention is drawn to the next meeting in the current series
being held at the SPGB Head Office, 52 Clapham High Street, London, SW4
next Saturday, 3 July at 6.00pm.

Glenn Morris will talk on "Business growth in conflict with the environment".

"Our political leaders, in the run up to the last election clashed and
argued over many issues - all of those issues entirely predictable and
all part of the pitiful cut and thrust of capitalism. One subject
which all of the three leaders agreed on, however, was the need to
return to growth. Economic growth comes at a cost and is a necessary
requirement for the successful running of capitalism.
Glenn Morris hopes to illustrate through personal observations and
experiences how society's love affair with economic growth is entirely
incompatible with the well being of people and the environment".

As a managing director of a business himself Glenn has seen first hand
the problems that arise when the profit motive clashes with employee
and environmental welfare.

Glenn is a highly experienced mountaineer and his previous expeditions
include the world’s first unsupported crossing of Spitzbergen and the
first British crossing of Greenland taking the route used by the great
Norwegian explorer, Fridjtof Nansen. He has also canoed the full
length of Canada’s longest river, the Mackenzie. Glenn is a Fellow of
the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the Climbers’ Club and
Arctic Club.

He joined the Socialist Party in January.

This talk by Glenn Morris is now on Youtube. I'm currently watching part 2 (so haven't heard the whole talk), but, so far, I'm very taken with the way he he explains this important message:

EDIT: In this talk, Glenn Morris makes frequent reference the practice of appreciating nature in its natural form, rather than the increasing practice of acquiring stuff. This brings to mind Erich Fromm's book "To have or to be?", which I read around 30 years ago. Reading this book had a dramatic and enduring effect on my belief systems ..... and a devastating effect on my mental stability.

It certainly is an important message. I am so tired of hearing our leaders talk about 'economic growth'.
