Britain's Next Top Model

I've seen some TV ads for a show called Britain's Next Top Model and while I haven't seen the show itself (nor would I want to), it seems to me from the ads that it is a competition where they take a bunch of young women and eliminate them by humiliating them until whoever can take the most humiliation without faltering wins.

This is a serious question, I'm not looking for agreement that this is abhorrent, I genuinely would like some insightful answers...

What are the motives of:
a) The participants
b) The viewers

The show's makers have an obvious motivation (i.e. profit by having a popular show).
I can't believe profit alone (through fame/glamour) is the only motivation of the participants, because there must be much easier and better ways for these women to make a decent living, they must be reasonably well off and have some education to get on the show. I can understand why prostitution exists for all parties involved even though I condemn it, but this show only seems to make any sense for the makers, so why does it exist?

It's something I don't really understand either, there are a lot of people that seem as if they would do absolutely anything to be some kind of 'celebrity'. That appears to be the motivation of the participants but I haven't got a clue why people want to watch it. It's like big brother and all that kind of thing, I have no understanding at all why so many people enjoy watching it.

No I don't think so offhand.

Instant stardom is pretty easy way!

haha. Me and my friend actually watch the show occasionally. and for me its because i always wanted to be a model, not so much for attention but just to feel beutiful, when you watch programmes like this its almost eye candy, beutiful people and clothes and make up its a lot of girls dreams, i suppose its like escapism so you can imagine what life would be like or whatever. also its nice to be able to say that you think your prettier than some of the models i know thats shallow but thats what people are like.

You'll probably find these females, have been told all their lifes that they are model material.
Then that gives them the false self esteem to go on these shows.
Lets be honest, what else would these females be doing, working as lipstick girls in boots.
As they obviously think there looks are going to get them further in life than their brains.
who says prostitution wasn't legal...

As George Carlin stated: did these beauty pagens stay up all night molding their faces..
No they were given them by birth, they dont work with there faces...

Sure you can work on the body, but the face is the face... unless you inject crap into it...

Plus the fact these models, usually turn out to be complete bitches...

I'm sure Gladiators is on the other channel....

No where did I leave my stupid stick....

Zen.... :silent:

On a psychological level,

On a psychological level, people live in different reality tunnels and see the world very differently to each other dependent on their past experiences. We are all imprinted at an early age and throughout our lives and dependent on what those imprints are affect how we interact with the world. To understand why people do things that you find insane will drive you nuts once you start looking into it.

Obviously these girls want to be famous models, and some might say this is a great way for them to get there. Once they are there, they earn fantastic money, travel to exotic places, stay in great hotels, eat great food, meet interesting people and get their beautiful faces plastered everywhere wih people envying them and others fancying them. What's not to get?

The people who watch it just want to see what lifes like outside of their lives, somr want to be models, some like fashion and others just have pretty mundane jobs and want to see what they could have won.

"The Apprentice" is a show to worry about!

Indeed, if thats the best the UK can offer, we are doomed!

I wish we had more shows like it, so we could get the country back to being a bunch of entrepreneurs and build this future we all want to see.

Dragons Den isn't too bad, though a shame so many promising products don't make the grade because they aren't super profitable.

Think how many small niche market products could make the world a better place, if only one was concerned about just breaking even, rather than making a fat profit.

Not that I imagine many folk here are into the money making thing sadly.

For those into a more practical avenue, I might recommend this site I recently came across:
