Some newly registered users are bots?

I don't know if anyone has noticed this, but I can't tell whether or not some new users who have registered to this site are either fake accounts or legitimate users? There are certain new members registering onto the site, typically having a short name then followed by a couple of numbers afterwards, and when you click on their profile, they register themselves with every single chapter group on the site. This is a pattern I've noticed going on for the past month -- could any of the admins please explain what I'm referring to here and confirm if they're not legitimate user accounts (perhaps bots?) because they are messing up the members stats for each region e.g. the East Anglia group went from being at 391 a couple of days ago to now being over 420 approx (which is an increase of over 30 users within 2 days) - I'm not saying this is unlikely, however when you actually click on these new users, they're profiles are set to joining every single local chapter group which surely defeats the object of having local groups in the first place?

If anyone wants evidence of what I'm discussing, you only have to look at the "recent members" list here for each group (my group is East Anglia):

I hope I'm not going mad but I know we did use to have bots roaming around on the previous website - what is the point of these bots?

here are examples -- all the following users have registered on this site using the same name as 'best' along with numbers after their names, all registering within days of each other -

I am totally confused by this -- sorry in advance if this has already been explained or addressed.

Thanks

Spam bots

Yes I have noticed this too, and if you check out some of the suspicious bot users, you will see they have posted spam in various places!

Solution I reckon is more admin/moderation staff to deal with the issue..

Hey, yes we know about this

Hey, yes we know about this and have already introduced reCAPTCHA on the registration form. In addition, I've just installed automated anti-spam functionality and the ability for users to flag other users and content for spam or otherwise offensive behaviour.

Obviously please use the flagging for appropriate use, but hopefully this will help us identify spam and stop it.

As for moderators, I think getting a moderation team is a good idea once we get this forum patched up.

Whilst that reduces spam, it does annoy users who cannot register easily!

Excellent work there, most appreciated.
